Social media addiction in court - A2

Social media breaks the law - 6th April 2026

A young woman had health problems because of Meta and YouTube. That's the decision of a court in California. Meta and YouTube have to pay her $6 million.

Kaley is 20 years old. In the past, she used social media a lot. From 6 years old, she watched videos on YouTube. From 9 years old, she had Instagram too.

Kaley used these apps every day. She couldn't stop. Soon, she had big problems.

From 10 years old, Kaley felt sad. She had depression. Kaley started to hurt herself. She didn't like her family or her school.

Her problems got worse. Kaley hated her body. She was afraid of people.

Kaley links these problems to social media. The court listened to many different opinions.

The court agreed with Kaley. There's a problem with YouTube and Meta algorithms. They make people addicted to their apps.

Meta and YouTube disagree with the court. But governments are worried too. They're putting age limits on social media.
