Camel gets new false leg - 11th August 2025

A young camel in Pakistan can now walk again because of a false leg. The camel, whose name is Cammie, lost her leg when she was looking for food on farmland. The land owner became so angry, he chopped off her leg.

A video of Cammie was uploaded onto social media. The government decided to send her immediately to Karachi, to an animal home. She was looked after there. However, after her frightening experience, the biggest problem was her mental condition.

Sheema Khan manages the centre.

Sheema Khan: "The main challenge for us was to treat her mental trauma. At first she was afraid of men being near her. She used to scream whenever someone wearing shalwar kameez tried to get close to her. I cannot tell you in words how much she screamed."

The camel sat for five months on her own. However, when another camel, Callie, was brought in, Cammie actually raised herself up onto three legs.

To make her life easier, the centre's vet, Dr Babar Hussain, arranged for a false 'prosthetic' leg to be made. It was built by a US company. Slowly, the team has helped Cammie to walk again.

Dr Babar Hussain, senior vet: "We don't force her to walk. We wait for about 15 to 20 minutes after attaching the prosthetic leg. She stands up by herself and walks slowly."

Fitting a large animal with a false leg has never happened before in Pakistan. Sheema couldn't help crying when Cammie first used it.

Sheema Khan: "I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true. Everyone here is happy now."

Cammie's going to remain at the centre forever now. There, she'll receive all the help she requires.
