New country fans in the old country - 23rd March 2026 View All
Data provided by Spotify reveals that the UK music market has witnessed a 238 percent leap in the number of people listening to country music. Given this colossal jump, it's little wonder that this year's Country to Country (C2C) music festival attracted over 45,000 people.
Noah Rinker: "London, how're we feeling this afternoon?"
Billed as the largest country festival in Europe with concurrent performances staged in London, Belfast and Glasgow, John Finch, the director of the UK Country Music Association, is staggered by developments.
John Finch: "In the last 12 months, the consumption of country music in the UK has grown by just under 11 percent, which is massive. It's the fastest growing music genre in the UK, and the UK has the fastest growth of anywhere in the world."
The genre's intergenerational charm goes some way to explaining the upsurge in its appeal. But that's also down to the breadth of topics which country music addresses, claim friends William and Cameron, from Newcastle.
William Martin: "One minute, it's singing about a truck and a beer. One minute, it's singing about a girl that you fell out of love with. A different song for every occasion."
Cameron Fulton: "Country kind of covers all the genres, sometimes. You've got the sad songs - heartbreak songs - and then party in the summer."
While Nashville in the USA's the spiritual home of the distinctive country sound and storytelling, it's reaching diverse audiences as it's picked up by artists from different walks of life, including rappers and pop stars.
Georgia Ku: "Hello everyone! How's everyone doing?"
In addition to this, British country singer Georgia Ku cites the positive impact of social media.
"Honestly, it's probably TikTok. I think the way someone can put a chorus on there, and thousands and thousands of people can hear 30 seconds of a song and know every word and want to be invested in it."
With annual analysis of UK music consumption by the British Phonographic Industry evidencing that country music reached a 100-year peak in popularity in 2025, the genre's also gained its highest share of singles and albums markets this century. With this analysis, next year's C2C looks set to welcome country fans in even greater numbers. View Less
